Meet the Cast of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

By Mary Lansing

Yo ho ho, matey! While the temperatures are beginning to rise and summertime is upon us, that can only mean one thing: some of the biggest, most awaited films of the year will be making their ways into theatres. One I have been especially excited to at last see? Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Not only did I have the pleasure of seeing this fantastic and latest installment (More on that later this week) to the Disney franchise, I also got to head out to Beverly Hills this past weekend and hear from the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. While I have been extremely lucky to not only meet some of my favorite stars, but, also discover new artists that I admire immensely. The Pirates crew is a perfect example.

The Cast and Crew on Deck (or, rather, in attendance) Included:
Javier Bardem (Captain Salazar)
Geoffrey Rush (Barbossa)
Kaya Scodelario (Carina Smyth)
Brenton Thwaites (Henry Turner)
Joachim Ronning & Espen Sandberg (Directors)
Jerry Bruckheimer (Producer)
First up, was the handsome and charming Javier Bardem. Portraying one of the most terrifying villains that Captain Jack Sparrow has had to take on yet, we were anxious to know what drew him to the role of the evil Captain Salazar. Turns out, it was his wife, actress Penelope Cruz, that introduced him to this amazing Pirate world when she portrayed Anglica, an old flame of Captain Sparrow’s, in the 4th installment back in 2011.

The villainous Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) pursues Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) as he searches for the trident used by Poseidon ©Disney Enterprises, Inc.

“When she did it back in 2010, I was visiting the set and i was amazed,” he explained, “I have never been on a set of a movie like that before. So, it was a first time experience. I remember talking to Jerry and saying that i’d love to be apart of it. I saw the quality of the production, and what fun they looked like. He called me five years later!” When asked if he played “pirates” as a young boy in Madrid, he confessed that he loved to Star Wars and playing space ships!

Which, brought up if his children (twins with Cruz) visited their Dad, in his very dark makeup and costumes, on set?!  Turns out, just on the days when he looked more “normal” for his role. When you see the film, you will understand that VERY much.

Next up were our new young loves in the movie, Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites. Much like their on-screen alter-egos, Scodelario has so much poise, and is reserved and when she speaks, it is with much sense and a very well thought out comment (Just like the films female heroine, Carina) while Thwaites brought to mind his character, Henry, with all the high school crush-like charisma and Australian meets skater boy good looks.

Offering us coffee as he took a seat (and joking he hopes it’s Irish coffee), the press was interested what it was like for these young stars to arrive on set for their first Pirates film? “For me it was really weird.” answered kaya, “I try to treat every job the same when I get on set, but, all that goes out the window for Pirates. It’s so big, and so cool. I had met Johnny (Depp) previously at a table reading but, when he came on set as jack that was it. I was a little kid again. I was more star struck seeing Jack Sparrow than Johnny Depp!”

“For me personally it was something that followed Hook”, adds Thwaites, “I still remember when I was a young boy I wanted to be Peter Pan, and Pirates was the next movie like that, with comedy, supernatural, and so I followed the franchise, saw every movie when it came out. It was such a huge part of school to mimic the actors, and do cockney accents” he chuckles.

We then got to chat with the hilarious Geoffrey Rush, who has played the beloved Barbossa for 13 years strong. Coolest tid-bit we learned about Rush? He loves fan mail, and tries to answer every piece! “I get some fan mail, and I always answer them. It may take three months. They build up and I sit down for a day and write back. Initially, it was young women in Japan, and men in Germany. I thought, what’s the attraction there? What demographic am I reaching?!” Rush could not be further from the (at once) evil Barbossa, and truly gives his all to the favorite character.

Next up, we heard from the incredible Directors of the film, Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg. Wanting to know what makes this 5th Pirates movie different than the rest, they were quick to know what makes it so unique and what they were trying to accomplish; “There’s many things. One is, we get to see how Jack Sparrow became Jack Sparrow. That was something we really wanted to explore and go back in time to see how he became the character that everyone loves. It’s a personal, strong journey and we want to have strong characters. We grew up together making films together, like 10 and 11 years old. Pirates reminds us of those kinds of films that we made.”

While Producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, shed some light on the hilarious cameo of Paul McCartney, he was quick to give the credit where it was due: “I didn’t make it happen. Johnny did. Keith wasn’t available, and Johnny has just worked with Paul and called him up, and just asked, ‘Wanna be a pirate?’ Paul said sure, they got together and worked on the scene, the costume. They had a blast shooting that together.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, will set sail into theatres THIS Friday nationwide!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

By Erin

The long-awaited day is here. I am very excited to say that Marvel Studios’ Guardians of  the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now playing in theaters everywhere! Easily the funniest film of the year, it makes for an awesome start to the summer moviegoing season, which I am so ready for! The story follows the team as they fight to keep their newfound family together while traversing the outer reaches of the cosmos to unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage.

Having now saved the galaxy once, the half-human intergalactic adventurer known as Star-Lord is newly famous and keenly aware of it. When the Guardians’ newfound notoriety brings Quill’s long-lost father back into his life, his bond with the other Guardians will be put to the test. So why should you be so excited to run out and go see it? I’ve got plenty of reasons for you!

All-Star-Cast

The chemistry between the cast from the first film is what really made it shine and become the huge hit it has turned into. I am happy to say they they’re all back! Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn and Karen Gillan are all back with the Guardians. New talent to the crew includes: Sylvester StalloneKurt Russell, Elizabeth Debicki and Pom Klementieff. James Gunn and the cast know how to make this crew work, the relationships built between the crew is fantastic and continue to grow and evolve.

Baby Groot

Baby Groot is the cutest most adorable thing that has ever happened on a movie screen. At the heart of some very touching and moving scenes and he provides some great comic relief, just watch him dance. Need I say more?

Awesome Mix Vol. 2

The music continues to be awesome. If you loved Awesome Mix Vol. 1 from the first Guardians of the Galaxy, then you will love this one too! Awesome Mix Vol. 1 is more than a great soundtrack, it is the mixtape that Peter Quill’s mother gave to him before she died and he was abducted. Full of nostalgic ’70s and ’80s tunes, each song is carefully dropped into the plot.

ALL the FEELS!

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 sends viewers on an emotional rollercoaster. You have all of the witty, clever comedy thrown in there of course. Drax’s one-liners  will have you cracking up. There are so many different relationships to pay attention to as we go deeper with the characters that are now well known. We watch Peter Quill and Gamora’s interesting ‘romantic’ relationship grow. Gamora and Nebula’s special sister relationship unfolds before us. Also Yondu and Quill have their moments. Love, loyalty, family and friends. You will become a part of the family in as you get sucked into the story. Not to spoil anything, but you may want to bring the tissues!

The End Credits

By now I think most Marvel fans know to stay until the very end of the credits or else you will miss out on some important information. So be sure to watch all the way until the end! 😉

The universe is expanding and it is extraordinary. What are you waiting for? Go out and see it!

Celebrate Earth Day with Born in China!

Celebrate Earth Day with Born in China!

By Erin

Disneynature movies are so magical. I learn so much about the animals on our planet by watching them as they take us to places we would otherwise never be able to get to on our own. Disneynature proudly presents, Born in China, opening in theaters everywhere this Friday, April 21st. A breathtakingly gorgeous film that will have you in complete awe; Born in China follows the heartfelt, hilarious, and all too real adventures of three animal families: a panda bear and her cub, a snow leopard and her two cubs and a golden monkey and his family.

Born in Nature is brilliantly narrated by John Krasinski (“13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” NBC’s “The Office,” “Amazon’s “Jack Ryan”), Disneynature’s new True Life Adventure film “Born in China” takes audiences on an epic and exciting journey into the wilds of China where few people have ever ventured.  Following the stories of three animal families, the film transports moviegoers to some of the world’s most extreme environments to witness wildly intimate moments in the lives of these animals, whose day-to-day endeavors are both captivating and comical. A proud panda bear mother guides her growing baby as she begins to explore and seek independence. A  curious 2-year-old golden snub-nosed monkey, who feels displaced by his new baby sister, joins up with a group of free-spirited outcasts. And a mother snow leopard—an elusive animal rarely seen by human eyes—faces the very real drama of raising her two cubs in one of the harshest and most unforgiving environments on Earth. This is the perfect film to go out and see on Earth Day! Or any other day of the year really, if you are as much of an animal lover as I am.

Character: Dawa and her cub – Snow Leopard

The first family we will meet here, is the snow leopard. China’s Qinghai Plateau, the highest mountain plateau on Earth, is home to the stunning and elusive snow leopard. Experts estimate that there as few as 4,000 snow leopards left in Central Asia’s high mountains. We watch the story of Dawa unfold, she is a mother snow leopard who has to fight to provide for her cubs and the environment where she lives in is harsh and unforgiving. At more than 15,000 feet above sea level, Dawa’s world is decidedly inhospitable making food scarce and surviving with two cubs is a difficult task. Having to protect her territory from other snow leopards, makes it even more of a challenge. Winter temps are bitterly cold, precipitation comes largely in the form of hailstorms and limited vegetation provides little relief from winds that can exceed 40 miles per hour. This mother snow leopard is truly a creature of majesty. And it’s instantly evident just how important this mother’s cubs are to her. Your heart will go out to this brave and courageous family as you watch the hardships they endure.
