Inside Out: Meet the Little Voices Inside Your Head

By Erin

*I was invited as a guest of Disney to attend the press junket for purposes of this post*

Have you ever wanted to meet those little voices inside your head? Or do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Well, in Disney-Pixar’s fifteenth film, “Inside Out” examines this very thought of what goes inside our head as we witness firsthand the turbulent mechanisms and dynamics of the five primary emotions driving an eleven year-old girl’s mind. At a recent press junket in Beverly Hills we were able to do just this as we got to sit down and chat with the creators and cast of Inside Out.

Director Pete Docter, Producer Jonas Rivera, and cast members Amy Poehler (“Joy,”) Bill Hader (“Fear,”) Mindy Kaling (“Disgust,”) Phyllis Smith (“Sadness,”) and Lewis Black (“Anger”) joined us for some very emotional fun, topics ranging from emotions, to Pixar, to Islands of Personality.

First we chatted with Director Pete Docter and Producer Jonas Rivera. Both have been with Pixar for over 20 years, and their love for creating movies shines through in Inside Out.

So how did the idea of “Inside Out” come to be?

Pete Docter  noticed that his daughter was going through some very emotional times, like all pre-teens do. She had just turned 11.

“I noticed my daughter growing up, being a little less goofy and wacky and funny and a little more shy and quiet because she had turned 11.  And at the same time, I was looking at different ideas for a film and thought about emotions as characters. The basic pitch that I gave to Jonas at first, and then ultimately John, was, “What if we have an 11-year-old girl who’s moved across the country, but she’s actually not the main character; she’s the setting, because inside her head are her emotions that help her deal with everyday life?” It was pretty much just that simple of a concept.  I didn’t really have a story yet.  That came from working with Josh Cooley and Ronnie del Carmen, all the amazing story talents that we have.  It slowly developed over the next four years.  But we all kind of know that, that it doesn’t have to be perfect.  We’re gonna make a lot of adjustments and refinements as we go.”

How did there come to be five emotions to go inside the head, rather than six or four?  Is there a mathematical reason for that?

Pete explained to us: “I pitched optimism, which is, we learned later, not really an emotion, and joy. I had fear and anger and some other ones, and we realized, man, we don’t really know anything about this.  So we did a lot of research, and that’s where this came from.  There is no consensus amongst scientists about how many emotions there actually are.  Some say 3; some say 27; most are somewhere in the middle.  We realized, well, we get to kind of make this up. We arrived at five, mainly because it’s a nice odd number.  It felt like a good crowd, enough contrast and conflict between them, but not so big that you’re, like, “Wait, who’s that again?  Schadenfreude?  Okay.  Lost track of −” so, if we were to represent all 27, I just − my brain was hurting, thinking of writing for all these characters. We ended up at these five, largely because of the work of Dr. Paul Ekman, who was one of the consultants on the show.  And he had originally, back in the ’70s, posited six.  It was our five, plus surprise.  And we felt surprise, as a cartoon, is probably fairly similar to fear.  So we jettisoned that one, and that’s how we ended up with the five.”

Do Pete and Jonas deliberately start out to make movies as a team or purposely like to make people cry?

Jonas had this to say: “We don’t sit around consciously going, “All right. Let’s make a great movie.” I mean, we hope that happens, obviously, but I think it’s just like, “What do we wanna see? What did we love seeing when we were kids? What do we wanna take our families to? What are we gonna be proud of? Let’s aim for that.”

Next, we had a hilarious chat with the voices inside the head of Inside Out.

Walking the Purple Carpet at the Inside Out Premiere!

By Erin

*I attended as a guest of Disney as a part of the Inside Out Event and I  am very grateful for the opportunity to do so.*

Last Monday marked the rainbow colored Los Angeles premiere of Inside Out. The movie’s stars, included Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black and  Mindy Kaling who all walked the vibrant purple carpet on June 8th.  The star-studded premiere also included Mario Lopez, Pink, Rob Riggle, Minnie Driver, Busy Philipps and many more. This was my 2nd time walking the red carpet at a premiere. Or rather I should say *first time* walking the purple carpet as this carpet was NOT red, but a brilliant PURPLE! My first time on a red one was last summer for Guardians of the Galaxy, which was also a very memorable experience.

So come take a walk with me along the *Purple* carpet! 🙂

At the premiere they had a model of what the control center looks like inside of 11-year-old Riley’s mind!

As we continued to make our way down the carpet, we noticed that they had themed games that represented the five islands of Riley’s personality — family, goofball, friendship, hockey, and honesty.

They even had a bounce house and a silly, but fun Honesty Island game, which of course we had to play!

Being the total foodie that I am, I had to take some shots of all the delicious eats and movie themed food items. You might not quite get the Broccoli Pizza bit just yet… go see the movie this Friday, then you’ll be in on the joke too. 🙂

Then these cupcakes, how adorable are they? They were quite tasty too!

Of course what would a *purple* carpet event be without all the movie stars??? 😉

Follow Along with me at Disney’s Inside Out Red Carpet Event in LA!

By Erin

Hey everyone!!! Guess what??? I’m Going to LA in just a few short days!!!!!! EEK!!! Well…..wait a minute, that doesn’t sound right, I live in LA, well technically closer to Long Beach, but still, It’s LA County. It probably sounds more exciting when all of the other bloggers from out of state say that. 😉 So, I’ll be traveling about 30 miles north of where I am, up the 605, to the 5, then the 101; but you know, in LA traffic that can take anywhere from 1-2 hours!

If you’ve been following along here for a while, you know I’ve been attending the press junkets for the majority of the Disney Movies coming out. Well, Disney has given me an opportunity of a lifetime to attend the Inside Out Event, which is one thing I’ve been wanting to do since I created this blog. To be able to attend press trips and events for anything and everything having to do with Disney, Disneyland, Disney World. You get the idea!

Inside Out I'm Going!

So it has happened! My first press trip (and hopefully not my last!!) with Disney is happening! Disney has us all there for not only the red carpet premiere of Pixar’s Inside Out, but for so much more! Wait until you read what else is in store for myself and 24 other lucky bloggers beginning this coming weekend on Sunday, June 7th! Check out what’s in store below!

First I will be attending a press junket for Inside Out, which is separate from this event, but as soon as that is over, I will be wasting no time and jumping right on over from that and into the fun which is starting at the CBS Television Studios for a live taping of Celebrity Family Feud. We have not gotten any word of who the celebrity families will be, but I do know that the survey does say that it will be hosted by the highly popular  and beloved Emmy Award-winning talk show host Steve Harvey! Celebrity Family Feud will be pitting celebrities against each other in a contest to name the most popular responses to a survey-type question posed to 100 people. Who doesn’t LOVE Family Feud! This was one of my favorite game shows to watch (and still IS) as a kid!

You can follow along with us on this part of the trip using #ABCTVEvent and #CelebrityFamilyFeud and will be airing June 21st 8/7C.

Our next fun-filled day has us arriving bright and early at the Walt Disney Studios lot for breakfast and then we will be viewing the Phineas and Ferb episode “The Last Day of Summer” followed by a Q & A session with the Creators and Executive Producers Dan Povenmire  & Jeff “Swampy” Marsh. Following this, we will enjoy a fun summer picnic with Dan, Swampy and Phineas & Ferb themselves! What a way to start the day! Many photos will be taken for sure.

Last Day of Summer

You can follow along with us on this part of the trip using #PhineasAndFerbEvent and will be airing June 12th at 9pm ET/PT on Disney XD.
